summer postcards from the farm*

“…every summer, like roses, childhood returns…”

It is summertime at the farm and truth be told Nigel is the only one that gets up early with me. We have a deal. I feed the horses and he chases the birds. We both take our jobs very seriously. In fact he has declared the whole pasture a “no fly” zone. I will go as far as to say that the birds are not even allowed to sit in the trees anymore.

Some old fashioned things like fresh air and sunrises are hard to beat and there are some amazing sunrises here in Tennessee in the heat of the summer.

So a few weeks ago we went to use the BBQ on the deck…and inside there was a bird nest with eggs. We unanimously decided that we would have to cook the burgers inside the house…and save the baby birds.

Well they hatched and I found a fat one in the Magnolia bush who had apparently launched himself off the deck. At least he had a soft landing.

The other one is still up on the deck and seems to be a late bloomer. He’s been hopping around for three days with his mouth open hoping his mom will still feed him. He’s been making a sorry attempt to fly…but gives up pretty fast and would rather just have take out brought in from his mom. We think he is acting a little bit like a Millennial. Living at home in his parents basement and getting fed. Ryan says he’ll figure it out. He was rocking a pretty nice Mohawk though.

shine on purple rain*

Rest in peace, my friend. He was a force of nature, a shining light of musical brilliance and really did see the world through purple colored glasses.
He had a nightclub near mine in Miami…and would come into our club with a cane & his crazy outfits that only he could wear…and I would make him Kahlua & cream…shaken like a milkshake. It had to be made just so. He never really drank it…he would just let it get warm and I would bring him another.
He was funny, eccentric, surprisingly shy and kind. He loved to watch the club chaos and was a great observer.
I had the honor of attending his birthday one year at his nightclub, Glam Slam which was an old theatre. He played non stop on stage until 3am…I have never seen anyone so talented or musically brilliant in my life. Or since then.
You will be missed by all. We lost one of the great ones…

a new leaf*

My new mantra for the year…and I am trying to live by it. Like so many of my tribe I struggle with being too much of a giver…Balance, making boundaries and saying no are now in my vocabulary. It is a long time coming…and sorely past due.

show me your horses

…the more we work with horse rescues who take horses out of deplorable conditions the more we learn this to be a big true.

Two of our favorite rescues are Sunkissed Acres and TheraPony…If you are feeling generous today they would love to have your Starbucks money for today! Even $5 would go a long way…

diy overdyed rug

and then it was pink*

So…you learn a lot when you live on a farm. Not the least of which is that cream colored rugs have no business being anywhere in your life. Not with two horses and a dog. And mud. And hay. And dirty boots.
I was in love with this vintage rug that I got in Turkey…It was just the right amount of faded and vintage blue. For about 2 months. Then it slowly turned a brownish grey with dirt stains. And then it was pretty much done. I folded it up and replaced it with something more practical. Continue reading

can words describe*

Not entirely sure why…but I am having a torrid love affair with spring…Perhaps it is the fact that we are in the middle of one of the most beautiful areas of Tennessee…or the fact that we just went through what was described as the worst winter in 30 years…but spring seems especially sweet this year.
